My “rules” for making healthy smoothies

I like to blend complicated (read healthy and delicious) smoothies that sometimes look like thick soups, and I love combining all kinds of plants in creative ways. I simply love the idea of including as many plants and nutrients as possible into my smoothies.

I like using all kind of ingredients for my smoothies so I always have a huge variety of veggies, fruits, and spices in the kitchen. One of my secrets is going to my local food store and just buying every kind of plant that I can get your hands on. I also make sure that I have organic spices close by (this is very important as you’ll see later).

I tend to use the same combo of spices in all my smoothies, I call them asian warming spices: cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and turmeric. These warming spices have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-aging properties and many other health benefits. One teaspoon from each of these spices will transform your smoothies and your life in positive ways.

Besides warming spices, I try adding into my smoothies at least 8 veggies and usually 2-3 different fruits. I usually choose low-glycemic fruits like berries or apples, but I may also use more “regular” fruits whenever I feel like. For me veggies are the way to go in terms of nutrients, while fruits are there mainly for adding sweetness and flavor.

My main goal when making smoothies is to use as many veggies as possible, and only a few fruits. I’m not shooting for extra sweet smoothies, I am quite happy with creamy and thick smoothies that deliver real nutrients.

Go beyond fruits in your smoothies

With time I discovered that there are many different tastes out there, besides the sweetness that we call “good” or “sweet”. When we talk about health benefits, the shift is even more important since vegetables deliver more nutrients compared to most fruits.

Talking about fruits specifically, here are a few simple reasons why I don’t think adding many fruits in smoothies is wise:

  • Fruits usually take up the space of those potent veggies.
  • Fruits are usually loaded with more sugar (fructose) than we need.
  • We know that sugar is not good for health, and fructose is especially hard on the liver.
  • I also have a low-carb eating style and balancing sugar is one way I keep my health in check (along with other things).
  • Fruits don’t really have the same high level of nutrients as veggies.
  • I usually choose berries over regular fruits since berries have more nutrients (including more antioxidants) while being low in sugar (fructose).
  • Also related to berries, using frozen berries will make for a refreshing and creamy smoothie which is always appreciated.
  • The extra sugar that fruits have (and that we don’t really need) slows down the absorption of beneficial nutrients.
  • Fruit juice in smoothies is definitely something that should be avoided.

This green smoothie was absolutely delicious

This green smoothie felt very natural and nourishing. It felt almost like serving a raw vegan soup in many ways, but it is still a smoothie. It’s perfect when served instead of the classic cooked breakfast, but works great as a refreshing mid-day snack.

It’s definitely one of those smoothies that you can’t wait to taste due to its bright green-yellow color which is quite inviting. And once you taste it, it will definitely be a keeper.

This green smoothie has a strong spicy taste that it’s going to leave your whole body feeling pure and natural. There’s also a spicy aftertaste that comes from the cayenne pepper and ginger, but it’s not in any way too much to upset the stomach. And finally, there’s a light aftertaste that comes from leeks, and this is an interesting variation to a regular smoothie.

Enough with the smoothie talk for now … Let’s now focus on putting together this delicious and healthy green smoothie!

  • 2 leaves kale
  • 200-250 g frozen spinach
  • 200 g frozen broccoli and cauliflower
  • 1/4 fennel (chopped small)
  • 5 cm leeks (chopped)
  • a bit of fresh ginger (chopped small)
  • 2 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 1 slice pineapple (skin and core removed)
  • 1 pomegranate (seeds only)
  • 1 tbsp wheatgrass powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 tsp ginger powder
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp aniseed
  • 1/2 tsp Himalayan salt
  • 600 ml water (on top of macadamia milk)
  • no coconut oil

Instructions

  • Add all the fruits and veggies into your blender.
  • Add the macadamia milk and the water needed.
  • Blend on medium to high until everything looks smooth and creamy. If it looks too thick, add a bit more water and mix.
  • That was it! Serve fresh or store in the fridge for max of 2 days.

Notes

  • Color: bright green-yellow, very saturated
  • Texture: a bit rough but yet creamy and easy to drink
  • Taste: has a strong spicy taste from cayenne pepper and ginger, but you can also feel a bit of leeks

I used homemade macadamia milk that was previously made.
Here’s a quick recipe for macadamia milk: add macadamia nuts and water in your blender and mix. Use 200 ml water for every 200g macadamia nuts.
Due to using freshly made macadamia milk this smoothie won’t last more than 2 days in the fridge.
