Learn how to put together a simple and healthy snack made from raw nuts. Top it with a few extras and you’ve got yourself an energy giving breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 100 g walnuts
  • 100 g pecans
  • 50 g hazelnuts
  • 1/2 tsp Himalayan salt

Instructions

Simple version

  • Mix the walnuts and pecans in a bowl.
  • If desired, add salt and mix.
  • Enjoy!

Complicated version

  • We need to soak the nuts in warm salty water in order to activate their enzymes and remove part of the anti-nutrients that naturally occur in all nuts and seeds.
  • Start by adding your nuts into a bowl.
  • Cover with water and add the indicated amount of salt.
  • Let them sit at room temperature for a few hours (overnight works best).
  • Remove the water and rinse the nuts.
  • If you plan to eat them on the spot, you can enjoy them as they are.
  • If you plan to eat them in the following days, you need to remove all the excess water from them, otherwise they’ll probably go rancid. Please follow the next steps.
  • For drying your nuts, line one piece of parchment paper and spread the nuts evenly.
  • Preheat the oven at 50 Celsius and dry the nuts for about 1-2 hours, or until they look dry enough.
  • That was it. Enjoy!

Notes

If it’s hot enough inside the house, you can just let them sit on the counter instead of drying them in the oven. Just make sure to spread them on a parchment paper or just a tray of some sort.
Make sure not to roast or cook the nuts in any way, we’re just trying to remove excess water by keeping them in a dry environment.
You can also use this method with other types of nuts: hazelnuts, pine nuts, pistachios or macadamias work the same way.
