I truly believe that the best and healthiest smoothies are made with more veggies and fewer fruits. This recipe is the perfect example of how you can combine veggies, fruits, and spices into one nourishing smoothie.

I never liked the idea of making 1 or 2 ingredients the central piece of my smoothie. I truly believe that the best smoothies are made using many different ingredients (mostly veggies and a few sweet fruits) and I don’t think that one ingredient alone can add much in terms of health benefits.

When it comes to smoothies, I believe in using different plants in various combinations, rotating them based on seasonal availability or just your taste. I believe in the power of experimentation and in learning to listen to your body.

Listen to your body

Our bodies are far more intelligent than we think, they simply know what nutrients they need in order to thrive. Our job is to listen carefully and provide all the building and nutrients they ask for. It’s that simple, really!

In Romania we have a proverb saying: “one flower doesn’t make the spring”. What this means is: one try will not get you too far and consistency is always the key to success. I believe this is very true when it comes to smoothies. Let me explain …

One single smoothie will not improve your health dramatically, but making smoothies a daily habit will most likely contribute to positive changes sooner or later. From person to person, this can take days, weeks, months or even a year but you’ll eventually get there. Bigger changes will always take a longer time but should your smoothies be done properly (aka, using more veggies and fewer fruits overall) you’ll start seeing those health improvements sooner than you’d expect.

Prevention is key to optimal health

I’ve learned that instead of searching for quick fixes to various health problems, it’s easier to concentrate on prevention. I truly believe that if done right, smoothies can be are a big part of this prevention mechanism. Drinking one smoothie a day will give your body the nutrients it needs to repair itself and to increase your immunity at the same time. This translates into a healthier life day after day, month after month. A stronger immune system is key to having more energy, a leaner body, better sleep, a positive mindset and basically to having better overall health.

And it all starts with small changes in your daily habits, things that you can implement right now. Smoothies are easy and fun to put together, plus they work great as a dessert or a snack. What better excuse do you need?

I hope that I inspired you to some organic veggies and fruits, and blend them into a wonderful smoothie. Why not take this recipe for a spin?

This recipe is the perfect example of how you can combine veggies, fruits, and spices into one nourishing easy-to-blend smoothie.

  • Blender

  • 200 g lightly boiled spinach
  • 1 big avocado (skin and seed removed)
  • 1.5 stick celery
  • 2 small golden apples (seeded, chopped big)
  • a bit of fennel (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp pea protein powder (or whey protein powder)
  • 2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 slice lemon
  • fresh dill (chopped)
  • fresh mint leaves (chopped)
  • pinch of vanilla powder
  • pinch of Himalayan salt
  • 400-500 ml water

  • Wash and prep the ingredients as indicated. Add them into your blender.
  • Add the water or any preferred liquid. Besides plain water, my top choices are coconut water or almond milk.
  • Blend on medium to high speed until you observe that creamy texture. Using the pulse function a few times will help you break down the ingredients faster.
  • Serve fresh or store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Smoothies are about being creative with food. That being said, note that you can easily skip some of the ingredients listed towards the bottom of the list, since all the “important” ingredients are usually listed at the top.
Instead of water, you can also use coconut water, coconut milk, almond milk or cashew milk. All of these will add plenty of healthy fats to your smoothie and will add to its creamy texture. But you can just use plain water (as I did) and it’ll work just fine.
